Lumière provides a diverse range of photographic art through its own proprietary collection, regular exhibitions, and acquisition activities on behalf of clients.
The gallery has work from over 75 photographers ranging from masters of the 19th and 20th century to more contemporary practitioners. All are established, with works in important museum collections, as well as having participated in multiple exhibitions. Most have had multiple books and catalogues published on their work.
The gallery’s collection is available in person at their physical location, in the Buckhead section of Atlanta, Georgia, and now online through their website, www.lumieregallery.net, in a format designed to engage the participant, with access to more information, in a more coherent manner than with the conventional gallery or museum.
Exhibitions are augmented by lectures in partnership with leading institutions, talks at the gallery, and through film screenings. Recent exhibitions may also be viewed online for up to two years from the date of the show. Many of the artists’ talks and film screenings are also available online.
Lumière was founded to advance the understanding and appreciation of photography. The gallery has also supported a range of photography initiatives at the secondary school and university levels.
Lumière’s founder is Robert Yellowlees. The gallery reflects his experiences as a collector of art for over 35 years and his service in leadership positions on the boards of major arts and educational institutions. His 40 year business career centered on the computer and information industries, including pioneering work with image processing technologies. He has also sponsored a number of programs, books and films designed to advance the understanding and appreciation of photography. He founded Lumière to extend that reach.
Tony Casadonte, gallery director, has had a diverse 30 year career in photography. Prior to joining Lumière, he managed the leading commercial photography laboratory in the Southeast. In that capacity, he was actively involved with professional photographers to support their processing and printing requirements. He is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology’s photography program and spent a significant period in the information industry, having been a partner in an interactive web design firm. In his spare time, he is an active photographer.
