November 2012

Welcome to the Fall edition of South x Southeastphotomagazine.

We’re pleased to bring you the results of our first Holiday Contest. I want to thank all of you who participated; there were great, thought-provoking photos and I didn’t envy Kevin Miller the job of selecting nine for the feature article. No matter your spiritual persuasion, this time of year means something to us all, and photographs are always a part of that.

SlowExposures celebrated its Tenth Anniversary this year with a stellar cast of luminaries from the photo world participating in a line-up of workshops, salons, and receptions. The main show was juried by Julian Cox, the Founding Curator of Photography at the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco and Chief Curator at the de Young Museum, and Brett Abbott, Photography Curator at the High Museum. In this issue we bring you a selection of 11 photographers who were juried into the main show, among them the first, second and third prize winners. These 11 established and emerging photographers bring us a glimpse of their work.

I met Rebekah Jacob a couple of years ago at LOOK3, The Festival of the Photo, in Charlottesville, and recognized in her a savvy gallery owner. The Rebekah Jacob Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina, represents fine art in many mediums, with a strong showing in photography. Rebekah answers our 5Q this month about her and her gallery.

New Orleans, that resilient city of the South, continues to command our respect, and their photography scene is one of the reasons why. PHOTOnola is a community-supported event, each year trumping the last with events, headliners, workshops, and exhibitions. This year proves no different. Jennifer Shaw, director of PHOTOnola, was kind enough to carve out a few hours to answer questions this month. Clear your calendars for late November if you haven’t signed up already.

Virginie Kippelen has been busy chronicling rural activities in urban environments with her portraits of chickens in city coops. Lovely and telling, her portraits just might kindle thoughts of having your own fresh eggs right outside the door.

And lastly, we bring you a selection of books for your holiday gift shopping. There is no better gift than a book, and photography books are lovely keepsakes. We hope you’ll want to order one for yourself and one for a loved one of each of our selections. And, if so, we thank you for supporting the photographers who’ve supported SXSE.

We will see you again next year. In the meantime, a safe and happy holiday.

And, as always, thank you for being here.

Nancy
